Throughout the year, Team SMART educates about the importance of STEM at our local elementary and middle schools, advocates for STEM and FIRST to students, teachers, and our community at local events and festivals, and supports FIRST in our community by volunteering at FLL tournaments, mentoring teams, and hosting robotics day camps.
Smart Educates
SMART travels to local elementary and middle schools throughout Jackson County, demonstrating our robot and educating students on the importance of STEM and what opportunities with STEM and FIRST await them in high school. We also demonstrate our robot at Smoky Mountain High School's STEM night and Southwestern Community College's STEAM night each year.
SMART also hosts an annual FIRST Lego League day camp for rising 5-8 grade at Southwestern Community College in association with the Smoky Mountain STEM Collaborative. This past summer, we also held our first robotics day camp for rising 9-12 grade at Smoky Mountain High School.

SMART Advocates
SMART brings STEM to the Blue Ridge Mountains at local events and festivals throughout the year. We have demonstrated our robot at the Dillsboro Lights & Luminaries, Jackson County Youth Leadership Council's Spring into Summer, and Sylva's Greening Up the Mountains. Through these events, we advocate for the importance of robotics, FIRST and STEM education in the community.

SMART Supports FIRST
SMART is thrilled to be part of a growing FIRST community alongside a growing number of FLL and FRC teams in our area. Members of SMART volunteer as mentors to local FLL teams, and have volunteered at multiple FLL competitions as referees, field reset, and judges. This past year, we volunteered at the Henderson Boys and Girls Club, and have hosted FLL competitions at Cullowhee Valley Elementary School in previous years. We are also beginning mentorship of two rookie FRC teams in Western North Carolina, located in Wilkes County and Haywood County.
